Washington Elementary

Summary:

Washington Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Raleigh, North Carolina, serving 493 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. It is part of the Wake County Schools district, which is ranked 59th out of 242 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Washington Elementary stands out for its unique student population, with a significantly higher percentage of Asian students (40.97%) compared to nearby schools. The school consistently outperforms the district and state in standardized test scores, with 72.7% of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in mathematics, compared to 69.3% in Wake County and 62.7% statewide. Washington Elementary ranks in the top 20% of North Carolina elementary schools, earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance is particularly strong among Asian, White, and male students, who all rank well above the state average.

While Washington Elementary serves a more socioeconomically diverse population than some nearby magnet schools, it has seen a slight decline in enrollment and a shift in its racial composition, with the percentage of White and Asian students decreasing and the percentage of African American and Hispanic students increasing. This trend is worth monitoring to understand any potential impacts on the school's academic performance and culture. When compared to other nearby magnet schools, Washington Elementary stands out for its consistently strong academic achievement, but it also faces the challenge of addressing performance gaps among certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and low-socioeconomic status students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is our 9th year at Washington, with our younger child now in 4th grade. We have been extremely pleased with the experience and opportunities that both our children have had. They have received the individualized challenges that they have needed to push them to succeed from caring and effective teachers. The choices of electives are varied and stimulating, providing chances to stretch beyond the typical core classes. There is a very strong and engaged PTA, which coordinates many evening programs to bring families together and build school community: the Fall picnic, Arts & Letters night, Math/Science Fair, Cultural Night, and the Spring Fling which highlights the arts electives have been annual favorites for our family. It will be hard to leave the school when our younger child finishes 5th grade next year, we always feel welcome when we come to the school, whether to have lunch with a child, volunteer, or attend an after-school event. The principal Mr. Grant is very inclusive, knows every child and greets them by name. We have appreciated the diverse student body, which is celebrated by the school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
