While Parkwood High has a higher percentage of White students (68.05%) compared to the surrounding schools, its academic performance, as measured by End-of-Course (EOC) test scores, is generally lower than the Union County Public Schools district average and the state average. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Parkwood High's proficiency rates were below the district and state averages in Biology (52.8% vs. 64.7% and 53.4%), English II (62.2% vs. 75.5% and 59.7%), and Math III (60.6% vs. 73.6% and 57.6%). The school's rankings for specific student subgroups also vary significantly, with strong performance for English Language Learners and Special Education students, but struggles with other subgroups, such as White students and students with disabilities.

Parkwood High's academic performance lags behind several nearby high-performing schools, such as Marvin Ridge High, Weddington High, and Central Academy of Technology and Arts, which consistently outperform Parkwood High on EOC tests and have higher statewide rankings. Additionally, Parkwood High's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from a high of 127 out of 469 North Carolina high schools in 2017-2018 to 259 out of 640 in the 2023-2024 school year. The school has also seen a sharp rise in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 19.82% in 2021-2022 to 42.41% in 2022-2023, suggesting a growing population of economically disadvantaged students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A small, wonderful school with a strong sense of community. My child loved attending school here & found the teaching staff very engaged with the students. Unfortunately we are no longer there due to moving out of state. We greatly miss this school! It is a "hidden gem" in my opinion. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
