Jacksonville Commons Middle

Summary:

Jacksonville Commons Middle is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in the Onslow County Schools district, with a diverse student population that includes roughly equal percentages of White and African American students, along with a significant Hispanic population.

Academically, Jacksonville Commons Middle has struggled in recent years, consistently underperforming compared to the Onslow County Schools district and the state of North Carolina in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects. The school's proficiency rates in math and reading were 10-20 percentage points below the district and state averages in 2023-2024. Additionally, the school's data reveals significant achievement gaps between different racial/ethnic groups, with Hispanic students outperforming their White and African American peers in 8th grade reading. The school's high percentage of students from low-income families, with 63.5% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023, may be a contributing factor to these academic challenges.

Despite its proximity to several higher-performing middle schools in the Onslow County district, such as New Bridge Middle and Swansboro Middle, Jacksonville Commons Middle has seen a steady decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from 312 out of 741 North Carolina middle schools in 2020-2021 to 591 out of 793 in 2023-2024. Addressing these issues will likely require a multifaceted approach, including targeted interventions, resource allocation, and collaboration with higher-performing schools in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I find that the atmosphere is just very punitive on the teacher level. There is the belief that children don't seem to understand the implication of non-verbal behavior and passive-aggressive actions. My children understand and can identify that some teachers, fundamentally are unhappy with teaching. There are a few gems. The greatest hope for this school is that Mr. Ehmann just became the principal. He is a fair, honest, and upstanding man. Some of the teachers are downright hostile. I wish that cameras were allowed in the classroom, so parents, and the administration could log in and really see what goes on behind the closed doors. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
