Newton-Conover Middle

Summary:

Newton-Conover Middle is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in Conover, North Carolina, part of the Catawba County Schools district. The school has a diverse student population, with a significant percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

Newton-Conover Middle has shown consistent performance on state assessments, with proficiency rates in mathematics, reading, and science that are generally on par with or slightly above the district and state averages. The school's performance for Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) student subgroups is particularly strong, ranking in the top 50% of North Carolina middle schools for these groups in recent years. However, the school's performance for African American and Asian students lags behind the state averages for those subgroups, indicating potential achievement gaps that the school may need to address.

When compared to nearby middle schools, such as East Burke Middle and West Alexander Middle, Newton-Conover Middle generally performs at a similar or slightly higher level, particularly in mathematics and science. However, some nearby schools outperform Newton-Conover Middle in certain subject areas and subgroup metrics. Additionally, the school's spending per student is slightly below the state average for middle schools, which may be a factor in its academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We considered private school, but decided to give the NCCS school system a try first, and I've *never* regretted it. My kids have been in the school system for 10 years now. I know of other families who come to NCMS from out of district because of the teachers, diversity, and excellent programs. We lucked out when we bought our first home in the district, we really did. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
