Oaklawn Language Academy

Summary:

Oaklawn Language Academy is a public magnet elementary and middle school in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving 508 students from kindergarten through 8th grade. This diverse school consistently outperforms the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district and the state of North Carolina in academic measures, ranking in the top half of North Carolina elementary schools and maintaining a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Oaklawn Language Academy stands out for its exceptional performance, particularly for African American and English Language Learner students. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school had higher proficiency rates in mathematics for grades 3-8 and in reading for grades 5-7 compared to the district and state. Additionally, Oaklawn Language Academy ranks in the top 5% of North Carolina elementary schools for African American students and the top 30% for English Language Learner students. This is particularly noteworthy, as these subgroups often face achievement gaps in many schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Oaklawn Language Academy is wonderful magnet school with caring teachers. The school is a language immersion program for students in grades K-8 grades. Studies have shown that learning a new language helps children improve their problem solving skills, increase their cognitive development, become more culturally diverse, and be more competitive in the workforce. I have witnessed improved test scores by my children attending Oaklawn.

Don't miss out on an opportunity for a quality education that's free. If you want your children to be globally competitive citizens demonstrating high academic achievement, bilingualism, bi-literacy and bi-cultural, consider the immersion curriculum at Oaklawn.

Oaklawn's success has resulted in substantial media coverage and numerous accolades from the Department of Public Instruction.
School of High Growth 2007 - 2008

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
