Gov's Village STEM (Upper)

Summary:

Gov's Village STEM (Upper) is a public magnet middle school in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving 707 students in grades 5-8. The school is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, which is ranked 140 out of 242 districts in the state.

Academically, Gov's Village STEM (Upper) has consistently ranked in the bottom half of North Carolina middle schools over the past 5 years, with proficiency rates in mathematics, reading, and science lagging behind the district and state averages. However, the school's performance on the 8th grade science assessment is a bright spot, with proficiency rates consistently higher than the district and state. Interestingly, the school's African American and Hispanic students perform better than the overall school, ranking in the top 40% and top 50% of North Carolina middle schools, respectively. In contrast, the school's performance for Special Education and Disabled students is significantly lower, ranking in the bottom 10% of the state.

When compared to other nearby magnet middle schools, such as Piedmont Middle School and Eastway Middle, Gov's Village STEM (Upper) lags behind in academic performance, particularly in mathematics and reading proficiency. This suggests that the school may need to re-evaluate its STEM-focused curriculum and instructional practices to better support student learning and achievement. Additionally, the school's declining performance over time, from a high ranking of 79 out of 692 North Carolina middle schools in 2015-2016 to a low of 557 out of 793 in 2023-2024, is concerning and indicates the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of all student populations.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote They should have never combined the schools. Upper school is the absolute worst! My child is terrified while in school and the administration team is ridiculous! I have been apart of Nathaniel Alexander for the last 10 yrs and I will be removing my two children from this place immediately! Close Quote

Open Quote This is supposed to be a magnet school with a focus on STEM learning. The STEM programming is nonexistent. The school leadership is not only uninterested in creating a STEM culture but is not vested in the success of ALL students. The student body is overwhelmingly Black, thus lacking diversity. The coursework is unimaginative and lacks the challenge needed to foster strong academic knowledge and skills for future success. In a world where the federal government mandates that employees are entitled to a 30-minute lunch it is beyond absurd that students are only provided 20-minutes. That is not only unhealthy but grossly unreasonable. The lack of extracurricular activities for middle school students is inexcusable, especially considering that middle school is an essential developmental phase in adolescence. This school does NOT deserve to be called a STEM school or a Magnet school. Mecklenburg County should be utterly ashamed of themselves for promoting it is as such. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
