Lincoln Academy

Summary:

Lincoln Academy is a public magnet middle school located in Greensboro, North Carolina, serving grades 4-8 with a total enrollment of 630 students. This high-performing school consistently outshines the surrounding Guilford County Schools district and the state of North Carolina in academic achievement, with exceptional proficiency rates in Mathematics, Reading, and Science.

One of Lincoln Academy's key strengths is its diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 14.92% White, 53.17% African American, 10.32% Hispanic, and 16.19% Asian. This diversity is notable compared to the nearby middle schools, which tend to have a higher concentration of either White or African American students. The school's Asian and White student subgroups perform exceptionally well, ranking among the top 5-10% of middle schools in the state, while the African American and Hispanic subgroups also perform above the state average.

Despite serving a relatively high percentage of students from low-income families, with 56.98% of students qualifying for free or reduced-lunch, Lincoln Academy maintains a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger and consistently ranks in the top 40% of middle schools in North Carolina. This strong academic performance, coupled with the school's diverse student population and effective support for economically disadvantaged students, makes Lincoln Academy a standout educational institution in the Greensboro area, outperforming nearby Northeast Guilford Middle, Kernodle Middle, and other local middle schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter joined the VSN at Lincoln for 6th grade and a friend had her daughters in 6th and 8th. Out of 8 teachers, only 1 or 2 were reasonable and competent. Three of the teachers were just horrible. One was verbally abusive to her students, openly shaming them in class. Another refused to let my daughter read on her lunch break because she felt my daughter wasn't sociable enough. Another admitted to me, after some issues were reported, that she didn't feel comfortable addressing the students directly in a one-on-one scenario so all students were required to bring Post-It notes to her desk and then return to their desks and wait for her to reply with her own Post-It note! While volunteering, I heard many of the same reports from other parents. Lincoln has some teachers on its staff that are either entirely burnt out, are too busy playing psychologist to teach or are just not equipped to deal with children in this age group. We made the decision not to have our daughter return next year and other parents feel the same. Some decided to leave their children at Lincoln only because they feel the problem is district-wide and not isolated to one school. It is a shame that education has become what it has. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.

Impact of COVID-19 on Lincoln Academy

The coronavirus has had a profound impact on education in America. Learning shifted online overnight, attendance numbers dwindled, and enrollment decreased.
