Welborn Middle

Summary:

Welborn Middle is a public magnet middle school in High Point, North Carolina, serving 419 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Guilford County Schools district, which is ranked 149 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Welborn Middle faces significant challenges compared to its peers. The school has a much higher percentage of African American students (61.34%) than nearby schools, which range from 25.85% to 47.11%. Academically, Welborn Middle consistently underperforms the Guilford County Schools district and the state of North Carolina in standardized test scores, with proficiency rates in Math and Reading around 20-35%, compared to the district's 37.8-49.6% and the state's 46.9-54.3%. As a result, Welborn Middle has been ranked in the bottom quartile of North Carolina middle schools for the past several years, with a 0-1 star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students, also perform significantly below their peers at the district and state levels.

However, the challenges faced by Welborn Middle may be unique to the school itself, as some nearby schools within the Guilford County district, such as Allen Jay Middle - A Preparatory Academy and Southwest Guilford Middle, demonstrate significantly higher academic achievement. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students and Welborn Middle's status as a magnet school may be contributing factors to its underperformance, presenting an opportunity for the school and district to implement targeted interventions and strategies to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is a terrible school. With no good leadership. A lot of the kids bully with no consequences. The principal is hardly there to deal with any situations. They punish the victims instead of the bully's by making the victims change classes instead of moving the bully's. It is the definition of insanity. Keep your kids safe and happy by not putting them in this terrible school where fights break out on a regular basis. It's the worst. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
