Allen Middle

Summary:

Allen Middle is a public middle school located in Greensboro, North Carolina, serving 703 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Guilford County Schools district, which is ranked 149 out of 242 school districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Allen Middle consistently ranks in the bottom half of North Carolina middle schools, with student performance on state standardized tests (EOG) significantly below the Guilford County Schools and North Carolina state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in Mathematics ranged from 26.7% (6th grade) to 34.2% (7th grade), compared to the Guilford County Schools average of 49.6% (6th grade) to 46.5% (7th grade) and the North Carolina state average of 54.3% (6th grade) to 50.4% (7th grade). The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as White, Asian, and Gifted and Talented students, who rank in the bottom 25-30% of North Carolina middle schools.

Despite having a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students (over 99% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) compared to nearby schools, and a relatively favorable student-teacher ratio of 15.2, Allen Middle's academic performance remains significantly below the district and state averages. This suggests that the school may not be effectively allocating its resources to support student learning. In contrast, two nearby public magnet schools, Otis L Hairston Senior Middle and Lincoln Academy, generally outperform Allen Middle on academic measures, despite serving similar or higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I regret coming here, I was only forced to come here due to my family moving houses. The school in my opinion is very ghetto, although the Principal tries to make efforts to make it good, students still act very rude, there are tons of fights for very small things, this school has a lot of drama, I do not recommended coming here, a student that had shingles was bullied in school, she was my friend, people here stick with their friends and dislike the others. :( Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
