Sherwood Elementary

Summary:

Sherwood Elementary is a public elementary school in Gastonia, North Carolina, serving 514 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Gaston County Schools district, which is ranked 158 out of 242 school districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sherwood Elementary has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (39.88%) and Hispanic (26.26%) students compared to the state average. However, the school consistently ranks in the bottom 10-15% of North Carolina elementary schools based on the SchoolDigger statewide ranking, with a 0-1 star rating out of 5. Proficiency rates in Mathematics, Reading, and Science are significantly lower than the Gaston County Schools and North Carolina state averages across all grade levels. Additionally, over 84% of Sherwood Elementary students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While Sherwood Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio compared to the district and state averages, this advantage does not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes. The school's consistent underperformance and the unique challenges faced by its diverse, economically disadvantaged student population highlight the need for targeted interventions and support to address the barriers to academic success. Nearby schools like Lowell Elementary, Woodhill Elementary, and Robinson Elementary may offer alternative options for families in the Gastonia area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Sherwood does not appear to be a good school, but my student and other family members have gone to New Hope, WA Bess and Hawks Nest and by far we have the BEST of the best here. The teachers and staff are top notch, love our kids like their own and truly just want what is best for them! Love them! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
