Holbrook Middle has a relatively diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 34.49% White, 32.95% African American, 24.07% Hispanic, 1.03% Asian, and 7.21% two or more races. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better in EOG (End-of-Grade) tests, is generally lower than the Gaston County Schools and North Carolina state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Holbrook Middle's proficiency rates in Mathematics ranged from 31.8% to 38.2%, compared to 43.4% to 49.8% for Gaston County Schools and 46.9% to 54.3% for North Carolina. Additionally, Holbrook Middle's statewide ranking among North Carolina middle schools has declined over the years, from a high of 281 out of 691 in 2017-2018 (3 stars) to a low of 597 out of 793 in 2023-2024 (1 star).

Holbrook Middle's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American and Hispanic students generally performing worse than their White and Asian peers. The school also has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 43.94% to 74.77% over the past few years, compared to nearby schools like Belmont Middle (38.5%) and Cramerton Middle (38.5%). These factors suggest that Holbrook Middle faces challenges in addressing achievement gaps and supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has super disrespectful students. I went into a class and the teacher couldn't even get one word out without having to stop. There are always at least 5 to 10 kids in redirect. Also the teachers and faculty members won't do anything about it Which that causes no one to learn. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
