Southeast Middle

Summary:

Southeast Middle is a public middle school located in Kernersville, North Carolina, serving approximately 820 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district, which is ranked 164 out of 242 districts in the state.

Despite serving a diverse student population, with 32.2% White, 25.85% African American, and 35.12% Hispanic students, Southeast Middle consistently ranks in the bottom half of North Carolina middle schools, with significantly lower academic performance compared to the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 33.1% of 6th graders, 25.8% of 7th graders, and 18.4% of 8th graders at Southeast Middle were proficient or better in math, compared to 45.7%, 38.9%, and 36.6% for the district, and 54.3%, 50.4%, and 46.9% for the state. The school also has a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 66.83% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Interestingly, the nearby Philo-Hill Magnet Academy and Hanes Magnet School, which serve similar or more disadvantaged student populations, consistently outperform Southeast Middle on academic measures. For example, in 2023-2024, Hanes Magnet School had 51.9% of 6th graders, 49.2% of 7th graders, and 52.1% of 8th graders proficient or better in math, compared to Southeast Middle's much lower rates. This suggests that the challenges faced by Southeast Middle may be related to factors beyond just the demographics of its student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
