Summary:

Sherwood Forest Elementary is a highly-regarded public elementary school in Winston Salem, North Carolina, serving around 650 students in grades PK-5. The school has consistently been ranked among the top elementary schools in the state, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for several years.

Sherwood Forest Elementary stands out for its exceptional academic performance, consistently outperforming the Winston Salem / Forsyth County Schools district and the state of North Carolina in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 91.1% of 3rd graders at Sherwood Forest were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to just 60% for the district and 62.7% for the state. The school's performance is particularly strong for certain student subgroups, ranking among the top 20 elementary schools in the state for White students and the top 60 for Hispanic students. However, the school's performance for African American students, while still above the district and state averages, is not as strong, ranking in the 200s-400s range.

Compared to nearby schools in the Winston Salem / Forsyth County Schools district, such as Bolton Elementary, Speas Elementary, and Brunson Elementary, Sherwood Forest Elementary stands out with its low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 13.7 to 14.2 over the past three years, and its relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 13.52% to 21.08% over the same period. These factors, along with the school's strong academic focus, may be contributing to its exceptional performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I had always heard great things about Sherwood, and was initially pleased when our child started school there. Although we did not have any issues with the teacher personally, several parents voiced concern over the teacher's overall negative attitude towards the students. She has a habit of yelling and rolling her eyes on a regular basis. There was an issue with school supplies that became a problem... Apparently, all of my child's supplies were taken on the first day and redistributed to other students as needed. Parents were never told that pencils and erasers would become community property, as well as crayons and glue sticks. The pencils and erasers my child was so excited to pick out never got used...by her. I contacted the teacher and had to press for an answer as to what became of the supplies. Be warned, check with your child's teacher to see if supplies are community property, as the teachers do not feel the need to be up front and volunteer this information. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
