North Forsyth High

Summary:

North Forsyth High is a public magnet high school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, serving 1,062 students in grades 9-12. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 39.17% African American, 45.29% Hispanic, and 4.71% two or more races.

Despite its diverse student body, North Forsyth High consistently underperforms compared to the Winston Salem / Forsyth County Schools district and the state of North Carolina on end-of-course exams. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates were significantly lower than the district and state in subjects like Biology, English II, Math I, and Math III. North Forsyth High has a very low statewide ranking, consistently placing in the bottom 10-15% of North Carolina high schools over the past decade, and its rankings for subgroups such as African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students are particularly low.

The data reveals a stark contrast between North Forsyth High and some of the nearby schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County district. For instance, Atkins Academic & Technical High and Early College of Forsyth County consistently outperform North Forsyth High on end-of-course exams and have much higher statewide rankings (top 20% and top 15%, respectively). Despite the high concentration of economically disadvantaged students at North Forsyth High, the school's per-student spending of $10,139 in 2018-2019 was lower than the spending at some nearby schools, such as Carver High ($15,235) and J.F. Kennedy High ($14,798), suggesting that the school may not be receiving adequate funding and resources to support its student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The Principal leads by managing and manages by crunching numbers. Teachers leaving during her tenure share commonality of rating her and the central office performance negatively on what seemed to be anonymous surveys. The central office allegedly baited teachers with sponsored, traceable surveys and/or illegally accessed controlled, neutral surveys to compile a "hit list."

In the past the District Superintendent has hired private detectives to monitor student and adult employee activity.

At least one assistant principal at the school was transferred to North Forsyth HS after demotion as a principal of another school. The one assistant and principal account for the majority of teacher evaluations reporting negatively on survey takers identified as reporting negatively on central office or site performance. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
