Hillandale Elementary

Summary:

Hillandale Elementary is a public elementary school in Durham, North Carolina, serving 537 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Durham Public Schools district, which is ranked 163 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hillandale Elementary has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (40.22%) and Hispanic (32.03%) students compared to the state average. However, the school consistently ranks in the bottom third of North Carolina elementary schools, with significantly lower academic performance than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. The school's performance is particularly low for subgroups such as English Language Learners, Low Socioeconomic Status students, and Gifted and Talented students, ranking in the bottom 25% of North Carolina elementary schools for these groups. Interestingly, the school's performance for students with disabilities is relatively stronger, ranking in the top 50% of North Carolina elementary schools in this category.

Compared to nearby magnet schools like Morehead Montessori, Club Boulevard Elementary, Easley Elementary, and Sandy Ridge Elementary, which consistently rank in the top 25% of North Carolina elementary schools, Hillandale Elementary's academic performance is significantly lower. These magnet schools have higher percentages of White and higher-performing student subgroups, as well as lower percentages of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Despite these differences, Hillandale Elementary's spending per student and student-teacher ratio are comparable to the nearby schools, suggesting that funding and class size may not be the primary drivers of the school's underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This was a great school before the exodus of our families to charter and private schools. There are still great things happening at Hillandale, however as students and families try to escape other lower performing schools by enrolling their kids in Hillandale they have effectively bottomed out a once excellent school. The test results and population prove this progression towards failure. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
