Lakewood Elementary

Summary:

Lakewood Elementary is a public elementary school in Durham, North Carolina, serving 385 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Durham Public Schools district, which is ranked 163 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lakewood Elementary stands out for several key reasons. It has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (47.53%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 16.67% to 53.55% Hispanic students. Academically, the school consistently ranks in the bottom 10-15% of North Carolina elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. Its proficiency rates in Mathematics, Reading, and Science are significantly lower than the district and state averages. Additionally, over 99% of Lakewood Elementary students receive free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. However, the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.8 to 11.6 over the past few years.

While Lakewood Elementary faces significant challenges, some nearby schools, such as George Watts Elementary and Morehead Montessori, demonstrate much stronger academic performance. This suggests that the issues faced by Lakewood Elementary may be unique to the school and its student population, which is predominantly Hispanic and economically disadvantaged. Addressing these challenges will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that focuses on targeted interventions, resource allocation, and collaboration with the broader community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a Duke University retiree, I volunteer at the school and, while I cannot attest to the quality of the teaching, I do know that the atmosphere is stellar and the staff is dedicated. The school is clean and cheerfully decorated and every little student I encounter is polite and seems happy. Close Quote

Open Quote Lakewood is a school to watch! The new Principal, and his Assistant Principal are excellent. They approach each student with optimism and encouragement. I tutor, voluntarily, a few days each week. The teachers are quite dedicated, and the front office staff are welcoming. They have done a good job involving retired Duke Alumni to both their classrooms and organic garden. I will not, however, sugar coat my review. There are many students with difficult family situations, and food-insecurity is a problem. Over 99 of the students receive free lunch (and breakfast). This school will continue to improve each year while Principal Hopkins is at the helm. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter really enjoyed her first year at Lakewood in Kindergarten. She loved her teachers and classmates and learned a lot. We're looking forward to next year, with high hopes for the new administration that seems really promising. I'd recommend anyone zoned for Lakewood to take a tour and connect with parents through the PTA. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
