Culbreth Middle is a public middle school located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 656. The school is part of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district, which is ranked 24th out of 242 districts in North Carolina and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Culbreth Middle has a relatively diverse student population, with 49.7% White, 10.67% African American, 25.91% Hispanic, and 6.71% Asian students. The school has consistently performed well academically, ranking in the top 25% of North Carolina middle schools for several years. In the 2023-2024 school year, Culbreth Middle ranked 210th out of 793 middle schools in the state, with a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. However, the school's performance for Hispanic and English Language Learner students is relatively lower, ranking in the bottom 25% and bottom 10% of the state, respectively. Culbreth Middle's academic performance is generally higher than the nearby Smith Middle and McDougle Middle schools, but it lags behind the highly-ranked Lakewood Montessori Middle, a magnet school in the Durham Public Schools district.

Culbreth Middle has a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 33.38% in the 2022-2023 school year, which is lower than the nearby A.L. Stanback Middle and Lowe's Grove Middle schools. The school's spending per student of $12,195 in the 2018-2019 school year is higher than the nearby schools, and it has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 13:1 in the 2022-2023 school year, which may contribute to its strong academic performance. However, the school's performance gaps for Hispanic and English Language Learner students, as well as the broader racial achievement gaps, present opportunities for targeted interventions and support to ensure equitable outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
