Central Cabarrus High

Summary:

Central Cabarrus High is a public magnet high school serving 1,305 students in grades 9-12 in Concord, North Carolina, which is part of the Cabarrus County Schools district.

While Central Cabarrus High has a relatively diverse student population, with 44.21% White, 24.75% African American, and 23.6% Hispanic students, its academic performance, as measured by End-of-Course (EOC) test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages. The school's proficiency rates in subjects like Biology, English II, Math I, and Math III are all below the Cabarrus County Schools district averages. Additionally, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American and Hispanic students performing better than White and multi-racial students, and English Language Learners, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students struggling the most.

Compared to nearby schools like Hickory Ridge High and Cabarrus-Kannapolis Early College, which have higher EOC proficiency rates and statewide rankings, Central Cabarrus High's academic performance has declined over the years, with the school's ranking dropping from 3 stars to 2 stars in recent years. This trend, along with the school's high percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients (55.1%), suggests that addressing socioeconomic factors and implementing targeted interventions could potentially improve student outcomes at Central Cabarrus High.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There are certainly socio-economic factors at play when comparing this high school to other high schools and lower test scores. However, my sons have done very well after graduating and they definitely say their high school teachers and opportunities played a big part in their success. One child, who was only an average student, said he was far more prepared in college than most other students from rural high schools. He also said his computer classes in high school helped put him far ahead of the average college student. As a parent I watched teachers during covid remote learning and they seemed to have well prepared lessons with well versed dialogue and engagement with students. The principal, Mr. Shoe, was always engaged with students and parents and was genuinely invested in students success. This school provides many opportunities outside of class. This school is far superior than test scores show. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
