College Prep and Leadership Academy

Summary:

College Prep and Leadership Academy is an alternative public charter school located in Jamestown, North Carolina, serving 821 students in grades K-12, with a majority African American student population (89.4%).

The school faces several key challenges, including underperformance on standardized tests, with proficiency rates in Mathematics and Reading generally below the state average. For example, the school's Mathematics proficiency rates ranged from 23.3% to 63.1% in 2023-2024, compared to the state's 46.9% to 62.7%. The school also has an exceptionally high percentage of students (96.22%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high concentration of economically disadvantaged students. Additionally, the school's student-teacher ratio has fluctuated, reaching as high as 43.3 in 2022-2023, which is higher than the typical ratio in North Carolina public schools.

When compared to nearby alternative schools, such as Carter G. Woodson School and Stoner-Thomas School, College Prep and Leadership Academy generally performs worse on standardized tests, particularly in Mathematics and Reading. However, the school's 8th-grade Science proficiency rate of 76.3% is higher than the state's 70.1%, suggesting potential strengths in certain subject areas. The combination of these factors presents significant challenges for the school in providing quality education and support to its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Great school. I moved to High Point from Wake Forest, NC where my children attended a private school. I was very concerned about sending my children to our neighborhood school. This school has been a godsend my kindergartener is reading on a 2nd grade level. My fifth grader is in honors classes and there is no social drama or bullying at all. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
