Lucy S. Herring Elementary

Summary:

Lucy S. Herring Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Asheville, North Carolina, serving 301 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. This diverse school is part of the Asheville City Schools district, which is ranked 65 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Lucy S. Herring Elementary stands out for its strong academic performance, with 5th-grade students achieving 80% proficiency in both mathematics and science, significantly higher than the district and state averages. The school also has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.4 to 11.6 over the past three years, lower than nearby schools like West Buncombe Elementary and Claxton Elementary. However, the school has seen an increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 36.19% in 2020-2021 to 53.16% in 2022-2023, indicating a growing population of students from lower-income families.

While Lucy S. Herring Elementary has maintained consistent high performance, its statewide ranking has declined in recent years, from 407 out of 1,473 schools in 2018-2019 to 451 out of 1,505 schools in 2023-2024. This could be due to factors such as changes in the student population, curriculum, or teaching practices. Additionally, the school's performance on state assessments varies across different student subgroups, with African American students and students with disabilities performing lower compared to their peers. Addressing these achievement gaps and learning from the practices of higher-performing schools like West Buncombe Elementary could help Lucy S. Herring Elementary build on its strengths and continue to provide a quality education to its diverse student body.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Within just days of my son starting there as a new student in Kindergarten the principle knew his name. And as for that it has been pretty much the same staff for the whole six years he has attended, which I feel is important for an educational environment. There have been a few replacements, but they were seamless and ineffectual. Additionally, the teachers and all staff there work hard to make sure that each student is working up to their potential, getting extra help if they need it, being offered extra stimulating work if they are academically or intellectually gifted, and they also emphasize arts and understanding different cultural awareness as well.Within the Magnet schools they each have a theme that is blended into the curriculum and would not ordinarily be taught at this level of learning. Vance's is "Human Ecology and Diversity". Other schools in the Asheville City School system focus on other things. Hall Fletcher for instance is Robotics and Math, I.R.B. Jones is Basic Skills, and so on, (there are 5 elementary, 1 middle, 1 High school, and a gifted school: SILSA {central office high school not withstanding, there they have a school as well where they teach vocational studies}. Vance also is a high growth school, a school of excellence, and a NASA explorer school (one of only 50 in the country!). NASA works out programs with the school. Also, every year the 5th grade class goes to Washington D.C., and then to Langley, NASA. We have always loved it at Vance, the teachers are great, they feel like family. After six years they know my son almost as well as I do, it really is a great school. Not only a great learning environment, but a an excellent developmental one as well. What you have to realize is that these first few years, elementary school years, are when kids are building up fundamental social skills. The environment they're in is very important. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
