Anson Middle

Summary:

Anson Middle is a public middle school located in Wadesboro, North Carolina, serving grades 7-8 with a total enrollment of 701 students. The school is part of the Anson County Schools district, which is ranked 168 out of 242 districts in North Carolina and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Anson Middle faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, student demographics, and socioeconomic factors. The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (over 55%) compared to the state average and nearby schools like Rockingham Middle and Ellerbe Middle. Academically, Anson Middle consistently performs below the state and district averages on standardized tests across all grade levels and subjects, with only 16.8% of 7th graders and 21.5% of 8th graders proficient or better in mathematics, compared to the state averages of 50.4% and 46.9%, respectively. The school has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger, placing it among the lowest-performing middle schools in North Carolina.

Anson Middle's challenges are further compounded by its extremely high percentage of students (over 99%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. While some nearby schools, such as South Stanly Middle and East Union Middle, also serve economically disadvantaged populations, they appear to be performing better academically than Anson Middle, suggesting that there may be opportunities for the school to learn from the practices and strategies of these higher-performing institutions.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The worst. I’ve never experienced such an awful place. Trying to find another school my daughter can go to and if not we are very willing to move out of this county for a better school. They will have all these plans but they never work. Ranked 640 out of 733 schools? Wow. Do better. Can’t keep teachers. They’re tired. I get it. Many kids there run the show NOT the teachers, nor their principle. Close Quote

Open Quote I almost didn't send my youngest son to school there after the experience I had with my oldest son, but the new principal is tough and the school is so much better than it was two years ago. I feel like my youngest son is safe and getting a good education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
