Alpha Academy

Summary:

Alpha Academy is an alternative public charter school serving grades K-12 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, with a diverse student population and a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

Alpha Academy consistently outperforms the state average on standardized tests across multiple grade levels and subject areas, with proficiency rates up to 93.2% in mathematics and 85.2% in science, significantly higher than the state averages. Compared to nearby STARS Charter and The Capitol Encore Academy, Alpha Academy has a higher student-teacher ratio, ranging from 18.2 to 26.7, and a significantly higher percentage of African American and Hispanic students, at 55.77% and 18.65%, respectively.

Over the past three school years, Alpha Academy has shown steady improvement in its academic performance, outperforming nearby schools, particularly in mathematics and science. The school's diverse student population may contribute to its unique educational environment and approach, though the high student-teacher ratio could present challenges in providing personalized attention and support to each student. Overall, Alpha Academy appears to be a high-performing alternative public charter school that is effectively serving its diverse student population in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went their for my 6th grade year and it was awful. For starters they didn't have a cafeteria and you had to bring your own lunch. Their were 2 6th grade classes, 2 7th grade classes, and 1 8th grade class. Everyone was crammed into little classrooms. I can't even imagine how the elementary classes were. I love school but this school felt like a prison. Each grade was in each class for an hour and 30 minutes. I'm in high school now and our classes are that long. I would understand if it were at least high school grades being in class that long but it was middle school. I couldn't be still that long. Each grade level including: 6th, 7th, and 8th grades shared 4 teachers. 3 out of those 4 teachers were from different countries and so you couldn't really understand what they were saying. If one grade level got into trouble with the teachers or something they could make everyone miss out on gym. It was stupid. When I was their the gym had just got finished being built. We rarely had gym. I had to leave almost by the end of my 6th grade year because 2 of my teachers were going to fail me. I couldn't understand they way they taught even though I stayed for tutoring. Alot of kids and my friends left that same year. Also some of the administration their were really rude to my mom. I would understand if she had did something to them but she didn't. Same for the teachers. I guess some of them didn't want their job. I see reviews online everywhere and people make it seem like that school is so good but its not. Its badly coordinated and my overall experience was awful. I had 3 sisters and 2 brothers go their as well. They also didn't like it. If you want your children to really suffer make them go to that school. It felt like a punishment to me. I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone. Close Quote

Open Quote If I could give a negative rating I would. I moved from California about two weeks ago enrolled my son to begin courses 11/27/17 I am now withdrawing him 12/13/17. I spoke with the Director Eugene Slocum since the this past summer about concerns I saw regarding the schools atmosphere, curriculum, and unresponsiveness of the teachers. He assured me directly via telephone conversation, email, and in person I would not regret sending my son to his insitution. Here I am two weeks later withdrawing my son because of the lack of respect between students and teachers, bullying without reprimand, and an overall negative experience. My son came from an extremely positive environment of faculty that truly cares for its students and would do anything possible to see them succeed. Here at Alpha the teachers namely Ms. Thomas were not helpful in accommodating my sons learning needs in an effective manner to which she called me looking for answers because my son was struggling. How can a child struggle from maintaining a B+ average to now in your school only for a week practically failing? Basic information was not provided such as a student schedule, parent portal, supply list, or teacher contact information within the first week. Hot lunch is not provided nor a means to warm lunch, occasions where "surprise supplies" were needed-these are supplies not listed on the original list just to complete homework, a consistent lack of communication, fights daily, and teachers cursing at students. My son mainly came for the STEM institute because he was heavily participating in robotics programs before arriving. I believed it was up and running after several conversations with Mr. Slocum and staff but as we arrived and have now seen it's barely off the ground and not operating. I just received a call yesterday 12/12/17 stating there would be a parent info session this week but my son wasn't given information to attend even after I spoke with his teacher over the program Ms. Thomas and Mr. Slocum about my sons interest. Overall, I would recommend not sending your child here unless you don't care about their education. I've learned in these last two weeks of being a new parent to a student of this school everything is not what it seems. I felt like I signed up for the Army again they sold me on a dream but when I arrived and signed the paperwork it was a nightmare! Close Quote

Open Quote Its apparent at the core of this leadership their stems a fundamental rooted to making a difference in a child life. The staff is award winning, and the environment is world class. Check this facility out for yourself and be prepared for the WOW effect Close Quote

Open Quote I'm not sure why there is even a rating on free and reduced lunches here. There is no cafeteria at this school at all. Also, I would recommend everyone stay as far from this school as humanly possible. They give loads and loads of homework (which has been proven ineffective). They are extremely rude. On the first day of school the traffic was oddly directed so I decided to get out and walk to get my kindergartener well, I was screamed at. Literally screamed at.. Also, if you are caucasian, or even look caucasian, stay away. The reverse racism that happens at this school is outrageous. They also forced my 5 year old to pray during lunch time. I am not against praying, but I am against breaking the law. Whenever I requested to speak with Eugene Slocum about it, he never called me back. I called him on 6 different occasions and never got any kind of response back. Please just take your baby to a public school. We are so much happier and I feel like my daughter actually gets a quality education at the public school she attends now. Close Quote

Open Quote Our family has had an excellent experience with AlphA Academy. I have three children attending the academy, and the small teacher-to-student ratio allows their personalized attention. Also, despite the fact that he's curently in the process of moving the school's location (on top of his regular duties), Assistant Principal Roger McCoy makes every effort to step out of his office and get to know the parents and students. For a school that's only been around for several years, their test scores show they're doing extremely well. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is ridiculous they change their policy on a daily basis on everything from parent involvement to parking and the assistant principle is the worst. Steer clear if you have any other options. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
