Durham Charter School

Summary:

Durham Charter School is an alternative public charter school located in Durham, North Carolina, serving grades KG-10 with a total enrollment of 643 students. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 1.24% White, 26.75% African American, 70.45% Hispanic, and 1.56% two or more races.

Durham Charter School consistently outperforms the state average in mathematics, with proficiency rates ranging from 92.4% in 3rd grade to 41% in 8th grade, compared to the state averages of 62.7% to 46.9%. In reading, the school's performance is more mixed, with proficiency rates ranging from 43.9% in 3rd grade to 47.5% in 8th grade, compared to the state averages of 48.7% to 51.4%. However, the school's science proficiency rates are impressive, with 84.7% of 5th graders and 83.3% of 8th graders scoring proficient or better, compared to the state averages of 66.2% and 70.1%, respectively. The school's student-teacher ratio has ranged from 11.2 to 13.8 over the past three years, which is lower than the state average and may contribute to the school's academic success.

Nearby charter schools, such as Woods Charter, Falls Lake Academy, and Voyager Academy, generally outperform Durham Charter School in both mathematics and reading proficiency rates, particularly in the upper grades. However, Durham Charter School's science proficiency rates are consistently higher than these nearby charter schools. Additionally, virtual charter schools in the area, such as North Carolina Cyber Academy and NC Virtual Academy, have significantly lower proficiency rates in mathematics and reading compared to Durham Charter School, particularly in the upper grades. The comparison to Ignite Online Academy, a virtual school within the Durham Public Schools district, suggests that the charter school model may be more effective in serving the needs of the local community than the traditional public school system.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has been great for our children. The teachers are very dedicated and willing to stay after school or work with students on the weekends. Overall, the school has high expectations, and takes care of some students who don't have much support at home, but I've seen children grow so much here. I like the family atmosphere. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
