Gray's Creek Middle

Summary:

Gray's Creek Middle is a public middle school located in Hope Mills, North Carolina, serving 1,126 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Cumberland County Schools district, which is ranked 138 out of 242 districts in the state.

Gray's Creek Middle consistently outperforms the district and state averages in most subject areas, particularly in 8th grade science. The school's performance is strongest among its African American and Hispanic student subgroups, ranking in the top 25% of North Carolina middle schools for these groups. However, the school's performance for its White and low socioeconomic status students lags behind, ranking in the bottom half of the state. Gray's Creek Middle has a diverse student population, with a relatively even distribution of White (46%), African American (25%), and Hispanic (15%) students, which is a key differentiating factor compared to nearby schools like Lewis Chapel Middle and John R. Griffin Middle.

Despite fluctuations in its free and reduced lunch rates, which range from 40.68% to 56.79%, Gray's Creek Middle has maintained a consistent 3-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past decade. While the school performs well compared to the district and state, it is surrounded by several higher-performing middle schools, such as John R. Griffin Middle, which consistently ranks in the top 25% of North Carolina middle schools. The school's diverse student population may be a contributing factor to its relatively strong performance, particularly for its African American and Hispanic subgroups, providing valuable insights for other schools in the Cumberland County Schools district and the state.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote my child started attending this school in November of 2018. Before she started here she was a good student with an A/B average. After she started she would come home daily in tears from the bullying. Teachers and staff stated they took it very seriously. Not True! Bullying continued almost daily. My daughter had food thrown at her, was cursed at, was called names and even had a pair of scissors thrown at her during class. Nothing was ever done. The teachers claimed they 'talked to" the students doing the bullying. Finally at the end of the year, after her grades had fallen significantly, she had taken enough of it and stood up for herself and then received a 3 day suspension. I sent the principal an email and NEVER got a response. We are taking her out of the public school system. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
