Bill Hefner Elementary

Summary:

Bill Hefner Elementary is a public elementary school in Fayetteville, North Carolina, serving 651 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Cumberland County Schools district, which is ranked 138 out of 242 districts in the state.

Bill Hefner Elementary stands out for its significantly higher percentage of African American (51.46%) and Hispanic (20.58%) students compared to surrounding schools. However, the school consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools, with proficiency rates in math, reading, and science that are significantly lower than the district and state averages. This is despite the school's extremely high percentage of students (over 99%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. The school also has a relatively high student-teacher ratio, ranging from 13.3 to 15.3 over the past few years.

While Bill Hefner Elementary's African American and Hispanic students perform better than their peers at the school, they still lag behind the state and district averages for their respective racial/ethnic groups, suggesting significant achievement gaps. Nearby schools, such as Ponderosa Elementary and New Century International Elementary, which serve similar student demographics, generally outperform Bill Hefner Elementary in academic achievement. These factors indicate that Bill Hefner Elementary may be facing significant challenges related to resource allocation, teacher quality, and student support services that need to be addressed to improve educational outcomes for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Teachers don't last long here. Almost every year, my child had a teacher that was their first year teaching. Those are the years my child struggled, the 1 year she had an experienced teacher, she thrived. The principle never seems to know what he's doing. There's a no tolerance for bullying, but he sweeps it under the rug so the schools stats make it look better than what it is. One teacher, all I did was ask a simple question about my childs homework, she proceeded to send passive aggressive notes and talk to me like I'm a child.

UPDATE: To tell you how bad it is. A boy threatened to blow up the school, kill all the girls in it, along with various other threats. He lunged at a teachers throat. He's been in trouble multiple times before. He made violent threats to other students as well. The school did nothing other than suspend him for 4 days. The school did not inform parents that there was a threat to blow up the school, no lockdown. The one parent who found out, the school told her to keep her mouth shut about it, but she didn't. She made videos telling everything. While they didn't go viral, the videos were sent to the FBI, CIA, local police, news and media outlets. Only then did the school decide to kick the boy out. This school is a joke. This is the only school where reporters aren't allowed. What is this school hiding? There's also been issues where a student was sexually harassed by another and the school didn't do anything about it. "No Tolerance", more like "hide everything so we look like a good school with no problems". Teachers have left, openly admitting it's because of Cahill, he's shady. He may seem like a nice guy, but all covert Narcissists do. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
