Sherwood Park Elementary

Summary:

Sherwood Park Elementary is a public elementary school in Fayetteville, North Carolina, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Cumberland County Schools district. The school has a diverse student population, with a high percentage of African American and Hispanic students, and an exceptionally high rate of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch programs.

While Sherwood Park Elementary has seen some improvement in its academic performance in recent years, it still lags behind the state and district averages in many areas. The school's proficiency rates in mathematics and reading are lower than the state and district averages across most grade levels. However, the school's African American and Hispanic students generally perform better than the school's overall averages, while the performance of white students and students with disabilities lags behind. The school's low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 9.9 to 11.3 students per teacher, could be an advantage in providing more individualized attention to students.

When compared to other nearby elementary schools in the Cumberland County district, Sherwood Park Elementary generally performs at a lower level, with lower proficiency rates in mathematics, reading, and science. However, some nearby schools, such as E. Melvin Honeycutt Elementary, demonstrate higher academic achievement, suggesting that there may be opportunities for Sherwood Park Elementary to learn from and emulate the practices of higher-performing schools in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote i am very disappointed in the EOG test scores and the failure to meet AYP.The morale of the school is a reflection of the administration..The principal needs to resign.Apparently he can't motivate staff and students.Enough isn'tbeing done to help the low performing students. It just doesn' look good. What is he going to do to improve so that the staff and students get the very best? The administation is responsible for the success at Sherwood Park Elementary. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
