Seventy-First High

Summary:

Seventy-First High is a public high school in Fayetteville, North Carolina, serving 1,366 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Cumberland County Schools district, which is ranked 138 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Seventy-First High faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom half of North Carolina high schools with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school has a predominantly African American student population (67.42%), which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools, and a very high percentage of students (70.13%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Proficiency rates on End-of-Course (EOC) exams are significantly lower than the Cumberland County Schools and North Carolina averages across all subject areas.

In contrast, nearby schools such as Cross Creek Early College, Cumberland International Early College, and Massey Hill Classical High significantly outperform Seventy-First High academically, with much higher proficiency rates on EOC exams and higher overall state rankings. These schools serve a more diverse student population and have lower percentages of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. While Seventy-First High's relatively high per-student spending suggests that funding and resources may not be the primary driver of the school's academic challenges, other factors, such as student demographics, teacher quality, and school culture, may play a more significant role.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The principle there could care less about the students. He spends his time in his office doing nothing and you can't even talk to him. The school ranks among the worst in North Carolina . Please tell me why he is still there. He insults the students and the parents. He is rude and is just collecting a check and what worse is the school board does not care. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
