West Side Elementary School

Summary:

West Side Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 427 students in grades K-6 in Picayune, Mississippi, which is part of the Picayune School District. While West Side Elementary generally performs better than the district and state averages on standardized tests, particularly in English Language Arts, it faces challenges common to high-poverty areas, including lower funding and performance compared to more affluent neighboring districts.

West Side Elementary has a higher percentage of white students (62.53%) compared to the surrounding schools, which have more diverse student populations. The school also has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14.2 to 17 over the past 3 years, lower than the surrounding schools. However, all of the schools in the Picayune School District, including West Side Elementary, have 100% of their students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage in the community.

The spending per student at West Side Elementary ($8,331 in 2018-2019) is lower than the surrounding Hancock County schools ($7,582 to $8,896 per student), which may contribute to the performance gap. Schools in the neighboring Hancock County School District, such as East Hancock Elementary and Hancock North Central Elementary, significantly outperform West Side and the Picayune district on test scores and school rankings.

Open Quote I am really proud of the extra attention west side elementary teachers have shown to help my daughter when her grades started falling. They gave her some extra work to help her understand the material and communicated with me steps that I could do to help my daughter know how to study in a more complete fashion. This resulted in her wanting to understand the class material and she has gradually worked her grades better than she's ever had all year. Many thanks to the help and attention from the wesr side elementary staff. robert Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
