Northeast Lauderdale Elementary

Summary:

Northeast Lauderdale Elementary is a public elementary school serving 699 students in grades PK-4 in Meridian, Mississippi, which is part of the Lauderdale County School District. While the district is ranked 24th out of 130 in the state and has a 4-star rating, Northeast Lauderdale Elementary faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students.

The school has consistently lower proficiency rates in both English Language Arts and Mathematics compared to the district and the state of Mississippi. For example, in 2023-2024, only 47.3% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 59.9% for the district and 57.7% for the state. Similarly, only 25.3% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in Math, compared to 39.8% for the district and 53.3% for the state. Northeast Lauderdale Elementary has a relatively low statewide ranking, placing between 166th and 231st out of 377-390 Mississippi elementary schools in recent years, and has consistently been rated 2-3 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Lauderdale County School District, such as Clarkdale Elementary and West Lauderdale Elementary, generally outperform Northeast Lauderdale Elementary on test scores and statewide rankings. Additionally, Enterprise Elementary, which is in a different school district but still relatively close, significantly outperforms Northeast Lauderdale on these metrics. While Northeast Lauderdale's performance is generally stronger than the elementary schools in the Meridian Public Schools district, the data suggests that Northeast Lauderdale Elementary faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students, particularly those from high-poverty backgrounds.

Open Quote Northeast Elementary is a wonderful school. My child has attended for two years and loves it. The administration communicates with parents by phone or mail on a regular basis keeping us informed about current events and up to date need to know information. The staff is friendly and very helpful. I feel my child is receiving a great education in a safe secure environment. She is a straight A student. If I had one thing to suggest...summer tutoring camp to prep children for the upcoming school year. I'm very pleased with Northeast Elementary. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
