Bellevue Elementary School

Summary:

Bellevue Elementary School is a public elementary school in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, serving 1,124 students in grades PK-5. As part of the Lamar County School District, which is ranked 23 out of 130 districts in the state, Bellevue Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, strong academic performance, and unique socioeconomic challenges.

Compared to nearby schools, Bellevue Elementary has a more racially diverse student body, with a mix of 39.32% White, 41.01% African American, 9.96% Hispanic, and 7.47% two or more races. Academically, the school consistently outperforms the state average on the MAAP tests, with 69.9% of 3rd graders scoring proficient or better in English Language Arts, versus the state average of 57.7%. However, Bellevue lags behind some of its top-performing neighbors, such as Sumrall Elementary and Longleaf Elementary, which have even higher proficiency rates and statewide rankings.

One of the most notable aspects of Bellevue Elementary is its exceptionally high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, over 99% in recent years. This indicates significant socioeconomic challenges faced by the school's population, which may impact student learning and achievement. Despite these obstacles, Bellevue has shown steady improvement in its statewide ranking, moving from 198 out of 418 Mississippi elementary schools in 2010-2011 to 110 out of 390 in 2023-2024. With the right strategies and support, the school has the potential to continue enhancing its educational outcomes and providing equitable opportunities for all its students.

Open Quote Teachers, staff, and principal teach and speak from a script. The classrooms are messy and overcrowded. There seems to be no structure or sense of a "mission" for the best interest of students. Staff seems primarily concerned with "funding. A pretty building does not make up for the lack of vision by the educators of our children.it is very sad. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
