River Oaks Elementary School

Summary:

River Oaks Elementary School is a public elementary school in Gulfport, Mississippi, serving 502 students in grades K-6. The school is part of the Harrison County School District, which is ranked 16 out of 130 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

While River Oaks has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools like Lyman Elementary and North Woolmarket Elementary, it faces significant challenges. The school has an extremely high percentage of students (99.4%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Additionally, River Oaks' test score performance, as measured by the MAAP (Mississippi Academic Assessment Program), is generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly in mathematics.

The school's performance has declined over the past few years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 189 out of 406 elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 194 out of 377 in 2022-2023. When compared to nearby schools, River Oaks consistently underperforms, suggesting the need for targeted interventions and support to improve student learning outcomes. However, the school's diversity and pockets of strong performance, such as in 5th grade MAAP Science, indicate that with the right resources and strategies, River Oaks has the potential to better serve its community and improve student achievement.

Open Quote Let’s start by saying my child’s kindergarten teacher spoke Ebonics.. really?!. She also played favorites. For instance when it came time to announce the awards she would only say all the awards given to black or mexican kids and announced one if any for the white kids. My child was AR, Star reader, and honor roll all year, she didn’t say anything about that. Over all, the staff seem nice but the school is unorganized. They do lack safety when it comes to letting kids just go with whomever. On Field day the teachers were letting the kids run everything and Not watching the kids. The playground is horrible.. no shade and the ground has no grass its all clay. All of my kids clothes were impossible to clean. AND I don’t understand The mindset of the person that set up the zoning. It’s way over populated there. 26/1 not what it says here 17/6.. what is that anyways?? Three Rivers Elementary around the corner has 14/1. They should make it easy... kids north of three rivers rd needs to go to River Oaks and kids south of Three Rivers rd go to Three Rivers Elementary. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
