Twenty Eighth St Elementary

Summary:

Twenty Eighth St Elementary is a public elementary school in Gulfport, Mississippi, serving 356 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Gulfport School District, which is ranked 41 out of 130 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Twenty Eighth St Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (85.11%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 11.78% to 74.63% African American. The school also has a lower percentage of white students (6.74%) compared to the nearby schools, which range from 12.81% to 74.63% white. Academically, the school consistently ranks in the bottom half of Mississippi elementary schools, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science that are generally lower than the Gulfport School District and Mississippi state averages. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 3rd-grade proficiency rates were 50% in ELA and 53.2% in Math, compared to the district's 65.1% and 57.7% respectively, and the state's 57.7% and 53.3%.

The high percentage of students (100%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Twenty Eighth St Elementary suggests that the school serves a predominantly low-income community, which can present unique challenges in terms of educational resources, parental involvement, and student support. Despite these challenges, the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio, which has ranged from 11.8 to 17.1 students per teacher in recent years, could be a potential asset, as it may allow for more individualized attention and support for students. With targeted interventions and a focus on improving instructional practices, the school may be able to raise its academic performance and better serve its community.

Open Quote Working at 28th Street Elementary is a rewarding, satisfying job which I absolutely love. All the students know how much the teachers love them and want what is best for them. The whole faculty and staff work very hard at ensuring the students are getting fun, engaging lessons that promote a love of learning. Our students are growing in reading, writing, and math. They are accepting the challenges we present to them with a positive attitude and are not afraid to try. I am so proud of all the students at 28th Street Elementary! The Buccaneers are Anchored in Excellence! Close Quote

Open Quote The family nights at 28th Street are so much fun. My children and I make it to as many as possible. This week Mayor Schloegel, Councilman Casey, and other presenters took part in the program. To top it off, Coach Calhoun for Move to Learn was there to get everyone up and exercising together. We loved it. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is wonderful! As a military parent, I initially made the choice to attend a school in another district. I was not pleased with the curriculum and found the Common Core Curriculum offered by the Gulfport School District to be more challenging for my son. Moving him to 28th Street Elementary was one of the best decisions I could have made. He was challenged and participated in the Gifted program, strings program, and served as a student council member. His teacher was supportive in everyway! Thank you to the teachers and administrators for a job well done. Close Quote

Open Quote This facility is located outside of the Sea Bee base and is a relatively new, beautiful building. The teachers and administrators work very hard to meet the needs of the students at this school and provide them with the best quality education available on the Coast. Parents are welcomed into the school whether it is for conferences or for fun. This is a well-kept secret of the Gulfport School District. Close Quote

Open Quote The Gulfport schools have been blazing the trail for the state of MS by being the only school district in the state to fully implement the Common Core State Standards on behalf of the state department of ed. The teachers have received statewide and local notoriety for their efforts. Two members of the instructional department were selected to serve on the state's national PARCC team. Our district is progressive; for example, all 9th-10th grade students have been provided en e-reader to lighten the load of the book bags. Other technological advances are being made available to our teachers, students, and principals. All core classes have interactive whiteboards. We have redesigned our high school to give students career-based opportunities and early college experience during their junior and senior years. The arts are important to developing a well-rounded student. Our music programs (band, choir, and strings) are among the best in the country and world! How do I know? We continue to win sweepstakes awards each year and have been invited to Disney and Germany to showcase our talents! Athletics? We are the home of state champions in soccer, basketball, and weight lifting. Our Marine ROTC teaches leadership and continues to win state and regional competitions as well. We hold ourselves and our students to high levels of excellence. Gulfport is a great education destination!

SN: Those of us who work for the district may bring our children with us if we live out of district. I'm proud to say, we chose GSD. Best decision we could have made. My children's feeder pattern: West-Gulfport Central Middle-Gulfport High led my sons to honors programs and academic scholarships. This school is no exception! High standards coupled with hard work leads to a successful child. Close Quote

Open Quote In 2011, the Mississippi Department of Education selected the Gulfport School District as one of three school districts to participate in a pilot program called Excellence for All. As part of this program, selected school districts were given the opportunity to develop innovative programs for their students that would prepare them to compete on a national and global setting in the core subjects as well as improve students' career and college readiness. Due to a major shift from Mississippi Curriculum Standards to Common Core State Standards, the data on this site does not reflect this shift. Please see the Gulfport School District's website to see actual testing information for the Gulfport School District. (You may also sign up to follow us on Twitter.)

A highly functional school district, the District's selection as a pilot program represents the progressive and passionate commitment to be internationally competitive as the community and district work to meet the mission of the Gulfport School District.

The mission of the Gulfport School District is to inspire each student to become a problem solver, lifelong learner, and productive member of society. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
