Willard South Elementary

Summary:

Willard South Elementary is a public elementary school serving 391 students in grades PK-4 in the Willard R-II school district in Springfield, Missouri. While the school has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, it has consistently underperformed on standardized tests and has a relatively high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

Willard South Elementary has struggled academically, with only 33.3% of 3rd graders and 25.7% of 4th graders proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 49.7% and 45.3% for the Willard R-II district. In English Language Arts, the school's proficiency rates were also lower than the district averages. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students (51.66%) qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the nearby Willard Central Elementary (39.61%) and Willard Orchard Hills Elementary.

Despite the school's challenges, it has shown some strengths, such as performing relatively well in serving its Hispanic student population, ranking 8th out of 120 Missouri elementary schools in this subgroup. However, the school has struggled to support its White and disabled student subgroups. The increase in per-student spending, from $8,436 in 2018-2019 to $10,439 in 2021-2022, has not yet translated into improved academic outcomes. Compared to nearby Springfield R-XII elementary schools, Willard South Elementary appears to be facing unique challenges that require further examination to better support student learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
