Woodward Elementary

Summary:

Woodward Elementary is a public elementary school in Saint Louis, Missouri, serving 239 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the St. Louis City School District, which is ranked 353 out of 386 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Woodward Elementary has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Missouri, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. The school faces significant challenges, including extremely high chronic absenteeism rates (ranging from 46.1% to 53.7%), well-below-average academic performance (only 7.5% of 4th-grade students were proficient in math, compared to 15.4% in the district and 44.4% statewide), and a student population that is overwhelmingly low-income (98.7% to 98.76% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch). Nearby schools in the St. Louis City district, such as Oak Hill Elementary, Froebel Elementary, and Monroe Elementary, also face similar challenges, suggesting that the issues at Woodward Elementary are systemic within the district.

Despite the school's consistently poor performance over the past decade, there has been little to no improvement in its statewide ranking or academic proficiency rates. This indicates that the school and district have struggled to implement effective strategies to address the needs of their students. The high rates of chronic absenteeism, poverty, and low academic achievement at Woodward Elementary and its neighboring schools suggest that these schools face significant resource challenges, such as inadequate funding, staffing, and support services. Addressing these underlying issues may be crucial for improving student outcomes at Woodward Elementary and throughout the St. Louis City School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Awful. St Louis City Schools may have gotten accreditation back, but they have not improved education. Way too much time spent on discipline instead of school work.
Many kids are 2 or 3 grade levels behind on reading. I hope things get better soon, but without positive parental involvment it's not likely. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
