Gateway Middle

Summary:

Gateway Middle is a public middle school located in Saint Louis, Missouri, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 506 students. The school is part of the St. Louis City School District, which is ranked 353 out of 386 districts in Missouri and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. Gateway Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Missouri middle schools over the past decade, with a ranking between 422 and 601 out of the state's middle schools.

Gateway Middle faces significant challenges, including extremely high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 50.1% to 65.9% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the St. Louis City and Missouri averages. Academically, the school's performance is consistently in the bottom 10-20% of Missouri middle schools, with only 9.5% of 6th graders, 2.2% of 7th graders, and 5.3% of 8th graders proficient or better in Mathematics in the 2023-2024 school year. The school's performance for specific student subgroups, such as African American students, English Language Learners, and students with low socioeconomic status, is also among the lowest in the state.

The challenges facing Gateway Middle are not unique, as the other middle schools in the immediate vicinity, such as Yeatman-Liddell Middle School, Compton-Drew ILC Middle, and Academy of Entrepreneurial Studies @ Louverture, also perform poorly and have similar low rankings and academic outcomes. However, some of the charter middle schools in the broader Kairos Academies, KIPP St Louis Public Schools, and Confluence Academies demonstrate significantly better academic performance and higher rankings, highlighting the potential impact of alternative educational models in addressing the challenges faced by schools like Gateway Middle.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
