Truman Elementary

Summary:

Truman Elementary is a public elementary school in Springfield, Missouri, serving 255 students in grades PK-5. It is part of the Springfield R-XII school district, which is ranked 206 out of 376 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Truman Elementary stands out for its higher percentage of white students (78.04%) compared to nearby schools like Weller Elementary (59.93% white) and Boyd Elementary (50.86% white). While its 3rd-grade math proficiency (29.6%) is lower than the district (33.9%) and state (41.1%) averages, Truman's 4th-grade math proficiency (53.5%) is higher than both the district (40.8%) and state (43.8%) averages, suggesting stronger academic performance in the upper elementary grades. Additionally, Truman has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (40.78%), but this is lower than some nearby schools like Weaver Elementary (91.07%), indicating a lower overall socioeconomic status of the student population.

Truman Elementary's performance has been inconsistent, with its statewide ranking varying significantly from a high of 170 out of 908 Missouri elementary schools in 2021-2022 to a low of 517 out of 901 in 2020-2021. Additionally, the school's white students have consistently ranked lower than the state average for white students, suggesting potential achievement gaps between racial groups that the school may need to address. While Truman generally outperforms nearby schools, there are exceptions, such as Pleasant View Elementary having higher 5th-grade math and ELA proficiency rates in 2022-2023. Overall, Truman Elementary appears to be a relatively strong-performing school within its district, but it also faces unique challenges related to its student demographics and academic performance trends.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have three kids in Truman, one graduated last year. The teachers and staff treat parents and children very well, creating a positive and respectful space. Having a child that needed a bit of extra help and still needs extra help, they've gone above and beyond what I expected. He learned to read above grade level from the assistance given. At one point, you could hardly understand him unless you were listening closely and he is just fine tuning some speech related sounds now. He is working on handwriting still, but it has improved at least. I volunteer at the school, so I have seen many wonderful things that make me very proud of the school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
