Skaith Elementary

Summary:

Skaith Elementary is a public elementary school in Saint Joseph, Missouri, serving 367 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the St. Joseph School District, which is ranked 254 out of 376 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Skaith Elementary has a higher percentage of White students (67.3%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 43.75% to 74.14% White students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better on the MAP tests, is generally lower than the state and district averages. For example, in 2022-2023, Skaith's 3rd-grade math proficiency rate was 29.8%, compared to the state average of 41.1% and the St. Joseph district average of 30.6%. Additionally, Skaith has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 56.13%, which is higher than the surrounding schools. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, but it has generally been in the bottom half of Missouri elementary schools, ranking between 397 and 895 out of over 1,000 schools.

Nearby schools, such as Ellison Elementary and Field Elementary, have significantly higher academic proficiency rates and higher statewide rankings compared to Skaith Elementary, while schools like Hyde Elementary, Coleman Elementary, and Mark Twain Elementary have even lower academic performance. The data suggests that the lower socioeconomic status of Skaith's student population may be a contributing factor to the school's academic challenges, and targeted interventions and support could help improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Skaith is a wonderful school with a strong emphasis on being family friendly. Parents and guardians are encouraged to become involved with school activities, PTA meetings and events, and through volunteering. My child has attended Skaith for 7 years (K-6th grades). The principal Dr.Martz is an outstanding principal who works well with students and parents alike. A few years back he designed a program called Skaith Parent University. This program gives an opportunity for parents to attend several educational meetings throughout the year regarding subjects like: District Testing Procedures, the District Nutritional Program, Mathematics Program, and other topics providing an inside look to how Skaith and the St.Joseph School District operate. I highly recommend Skaith Elementary to any family interested in relocating to St.Joseph, MO. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
