Edison Elementary

Summary:

Edison Elementary is a public elementary school located in Saint Joseph, Missouri, serving grades PK-6 with a student population of 288. The school is part of the St. Joseph School District, which is ranked 254 out of 376 districts in Missouri and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Despite having a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a racial makeup of 43.75% White, 13.89% African American, 20.49% Hispanic, 0.35% Asian, 4.51% Pacific Islander, and 17.01% two or more races, Edison Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom half of Missouri elementary schools, with a ranking of 650 out of 898 in the 2022-2023 school year. This is significantly lower than the nearby Oak Grove Elementary, which ranked 192 out of 898 in the same year. Edison Elementary's proficiency rates in Mathematics, Science, and English Language Arts are also consistently lower than the St. Joseph district and the state of Missouri averages.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Edison Elementary, with 98.96% of students qualifying in the 2022-2023 school year, is likely a significant factor in the school's lower academic performance. This is significantly higher than the nearby schools, such as Pickett Elementary (60.67%) and Pershing Elementary (45.84%). Despite the higher spending per student at Edison Elementary, with $11,814 spent per student in the 2021-2022 school year, this does not seem to translate into better academic outcomes, suggesting that factors beyond funding may be more important in improving the school's performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have been at Edison since I was in kindergarten, the school premises are clean, the teachers do their job when it comes to teaching but one HUGE set back are the students. There always has to be some kind of drama, then it gets out of hand and blah blah blah. And people blame the teachers, when they’re trying they’re hardest to get the students under control, the teachers try everything, taking away recess, yelling at us, talking with us, rewarding us when we’re good, they’ve tried it all, but nothing works with these kids! They just keep talking and it puts SO MUCH mental stress on the kids who are trying to learn, like for example, I could be doing a group project and instead of one person taking one branch of the project and another person doing another, I end up having to do the whole thing by myself because the other people were to careless to listen to the teacher talking and so they didn’t learn anything! And like when we’re trying to do work the kids will get loud then the teacher will start telling everyone to be quiet then that makes more noise and then it gets hard to focus! Like what the heck! And they’re are SO many more points that I would make because I am one of the students who wants to learn but can’t because of idiotic classmates. Now keep in mind, I have had a lot of the same classmates throughout my time there, and I’m sure some classmates are much better then Mine, but this is what I think of Edison, it is a one star review not because of the staff, not because of how clean the school is but because of the students. The students are what makes it seem like the staff is bad, the students are what’s gonna take away the full education your child SHOULD be getting, the students are gonna end up in some shape or form hurting your child. Probably not physically, but emotionally and mentally. So it stays a one star review until these students get it into their tiny little insignificant brains that they are the reason for other kids suffering grades and mental state, teachers getting fired for “not doing their job” when really they were, just the students were just making it hard to teach the class. Once that happens...I will be much happier there. Thank god this is my last year going to Edison. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
