Marvin Elementary

Summary:

Marvin Elementary is a public elementary school located in Saint Louis, Missouri, serving 517 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Ritenour School District, which is ranked 326 out of 386 districts in Missouri and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Marvin Elementary faces significant challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, well above the state and district averages, and consistently low academic performance on MAP tests, with proficiency rates in 3rd-grade math at just 11.6%, compared to 19.9% in the Ritenour district and 40.8% statewide. The school's performance for specific student subgroups, such as African American and Special Education students, is also lower than state and district averages. Additionally, Marvin Elementary has an extremely high percentage of students (over 99%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high concentration of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

When compared to other schools within the Ritenour district, such as Wyland Elementary, Iveland Elementary, Kratz Elementary, and Marion Elementary, Marvin Elementary consistently performs worse on academic measures, including test scores and subgroup performance. Despite the school's relatively high spending per student, ranging from $9,169 to $12,122 over the past few years, these resources do not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes. Addressing the complex socioeconomic factors impacting the Marvin Elementary community will likely require a comprehensive and sustained approach.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I had my son in Marvin for 2 months. I had to take him from this environment and homeschool his Kindergarden year. I do not like how issues are addressed at Marvin. I do not feel like the staff listened to my thoughts and concerns for my child. They were unwilling to work with me on making my child's experience better. I think the school has potential as long as their VP stays and keeps working with the kids and the parents. I hope the best for Marvin and for the school district. I just don't feel they are doing the job that they should be. Close Quote

Open Quote While I was very scared by Marvin Elementary's rankings (based on test scores), and somewhat apprehensive at sending my children there, I have actually been very happy with this school. Being mostly a lower-middle to lower class area you certainly get children who seem to come from less-than-stable homes, but at the elementary level this doesn't seem to translate into many problems . . .as children at this age are still generally children, and still nice regardless of conditions at home.

Also, I've been fairly impressed with the leadership at the school. They took over in the 2009 school year and seem to be bright people who truly care for the success of their school and the well-being of their students. They have also been very responsive to concerns I've voiced.

We've had chances to change schools, but have decided to continue with Marvin because despite low rankings they have not failed us in any way yet. Our children have been happy there thus far. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
