Lucas Crossing Elementary Complex

Summary:

Lucas Crossing Elementary Complex is a public school serving 636 students in grades 1-8 in the Normandy Schools Collaborative district in Saint Louis, Missouri. The school has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in the state, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger indicating very poor performance.

Lucas Crossing faces significant challenges, with students performing far below state and district averages on standardized tests. For example, in the 2022-2023 school year, only 6.7% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in math, compared to 41.1% statewide and 10% for the Normandy district. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 64.74% to 99.53% over the past few years, indicating a predominantly low-income student population. While Lucas Crossing spends more per student than the state average, it still lags behind some nearby schools in the Ferguson-Florissant R-II and Jennings districts in terms of spending per student.

Interestingly, the other Barack Obama Elementary, Washington Elementary, and Jefferson Elementary schools in the Normandy district also perform poorly on standardized tests and have high percentages of low-income students, but their performance is generally slightly better than Lucas Crossing. This suggests that factors beyond just socioeconomic status may be contributing to the persistent challenges faced by the Normandy schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Students bringing guns, hammers, and weed to school, teachers and other staff just quitting during the year because of the awful gossip-filled environment. LC functions more like a ratchet reality TV show than any type of educational institution. The only way they can keep teachers is by threatening to take away our teaching certificates and that's just another way they BULLY teachers in the district and in this school. I look forward to leaving this abomination of a "school district". DO NOT WORK HERE! It is where careers and spirits go to die. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
