Hawthorne Elementary

Summary:

Hawthorne Elementary is a public elementary school in Mexico, Missouri, serving 429 students in grades 1-5. The school is part of the Mexico 59 school district, which is ranked 285 out of 376 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hawthorne Elementary faces several key challenges. The school has a higher percentage of White (75.52%) and Hispanic (8.16%) students compared to nearby schools, which range from 74.06% to 96.53% White students. Academically, Hawthorne consistently underperforms the state and district averages in standardized test scores, with only 11.9% of 3rd-graders proficient in math compared to the state average of 41.1% and the district average of 17%. Additionally, Hawthorne has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 99.28% to 100% over the past three years, significantly higher than the 25.08% to 59.46% rates at surrounding schools.

Despite these challenges, Hawthorne's Hispanic and low-socioeconomic status (SES) student subgroups have performed better than the school's overall performance, ranking 64th and 95th out of Missouri elementary schools, respectively, in recent years. This suggests that the school may be more effectively serving these subgroups compared to the overall student population. Additionally, while Hawthorne and the other nearby schools in the Mexico 59 district share similar demographic characteristics, Hawthorne consistently underperforms the other schools in the district on academic measures, indicating potential opportunities for the school to learn from the instructional practices and strategies employed by the higher-performing schools in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Hawthorne elementary in Mexico MO has been excellent for all three of my children but has been wonderful for my son with Autism. He attended a neighboring school his entire life before we relocated and there is no comparison. Mr Señor is highly aware of what his disability involves and has been of great help to my son and myself. Highly recommended Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
