Gladstone Elementary

Summary:

Gladstone Elementary is a public elementary school in Kansas City, Missouri, serving 372 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Kansas City 33 school district, which is ranked 338 out of 386 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Gladstone Elementary faces significant challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 36.5% to 55.0% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average and the rates of nearby schools like Trailwoods Elementary (55.0%), Rogers Elementary (55.0%), and James Elementary (55.0%). The school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better on the MAP tests, is consistently lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with the 3rd-grade math proficiency rate at just 20.1% in 2023-2024, compared to the state average of 40.8% and the district average of 20.3%.

Gladstone Elementary's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with the school performing relatively well for African American students and English Language Learners, but struggling with Hispanic and White student populations, ranking in the bottom 10% of Missouri elementary schools for these subgroups. Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $14,927 to $21,090 over the past few years, these resources do not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes, suggesting the need for a more effective resource allocation strategy.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The way they deal with their special needs kids is to call the parents and send them home. This school needs better resources and better training to help take care of kids with ADHD, anxiety, and other neurological disorders. Our child is in another school now and doesn't exhibit any of the negative behaviors she did while at Gladstone. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
