Hawthorn Elementary consistently outperforms state and district averages on standardized tests, with 50% of 3rd-graders proficient in Math compared to 43.1% district-wide and 41.1% statewide. The school also has a more diverse student population than nearby schools, with higher percentages of African American, Hispanic, and multiracial students. While Hawthorn Elementary's academic performance has been strong overall, ranking in the top 30% of Missouri elementary schools, its ranking has fluctuated in recent years. The school has performed exceptionally well in serving its African American students but has had more mixed results for its Hispanic and low-income students. As the school's diversity continues to increase, the leadership should focus on ensuring equitable outcomes for all students, regardless of their background. Comparing Hawthorn's practices to those of higher-performing nearby schools, such as Mid Rivers Elementary and Becky-David Elementary, could provide valuable insights to further improve the school's performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The new principal, Ms. Rousch, is wonderful with the kids. She is a friendly, happy and outgoing person who greets the children by their names (how she knows all the names, I do not know!). She keeps the school positive and the children love it there. This school has made a 180 degree turn-around for the good since she has become the principal. She really cares about the kids. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
