Blue Ridge Elementary

Summary:

Blue Ridge Elementary is a public elementary school in Columbia, Missouri, serving 419 students in grades PK-5. Unfortunately, this school has consistently performed poorly compared to other elementary schools in the state, ranking in the bottom 20% of Missouri schools over the past 10 years and receiving a 0 or 1 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Blue Ridge Elementary struggles across several key metrics. Its proficiency rates on state assessments are significantly lower than the Columbia 93 district and Missouri state averages, with only 15.3% of 3rd graders proficient in math compared to 37.6% in the district and 40.8% statewide. The school also has extremely high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 24.3% to 34.4% over the past few years, and an exceptionally high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high concentration of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

Interestingly, nearby Shepard Blvd. Elementary, West Blvd. Elementary, and John Ridgeway Elementary generally perform better than Blue Ridge Elementary on key metrics, suggesting that socioeconomic factors may be playing a significant role in Blue Ridge's challenges. Addressing the root causes of the school's high chronic absenteeism rates could also be an important step in improving academic outcomes for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school was once considered a, "diamond in the rough" and had really turned itself around within a five year span between 2006-2011 (ish). Unfortunately, the principal of many years apparently left to turn another school around. The new principal has done very little to show that she cares about this once thriving elementary school. One of my children were repeatedly harassed and while the teacher tried to help as best as she could, the principal did nothing to help the issue. The teachers don't seem as happy and energetic and neither do the kids since Mr. Majerus left and Ms. Palmer took over. She has dismissed a lot of tradition that made the school so special. Annual field trips were cut this year and for first time ever, the school carnival was cut this year quite unexpectedly and of course, Principal Palmer blamed it on a lack of PTA participation. This upset many of us parents who know the effort and time we have put into planning another great carnival for the kids. She wasn't willing to contribute time, money, or extra teacher and community participation. A few family friends and fellow parents have reported the principal smelling of alcohol at parent/teacher conferences and other school functions. She doesn't seem to get to know or show that she cares to know children and their families on a personal level at all, especially the families who are Hispanic, African American, and low-income. A few of the PTA members overheard her mention that maybe there would be higher parent participation amongst low-income and African American groups if Newport cigarettes and 40 oz. beer were served. I was appalled and I'm not even part of that targeted demographic! My child came home in tears after learning that the P.E teacher, secretary of nearly 30 years, and a BUNCH of other wonderful educators who have been part of some of our kids' history at the school are not planning to return in the fall. Many parents are confused about why or how so many teachers are leaving but deep down, it's pretty obvious what it's a result from. It is a very, very hard decision for my family to consider leaving this once incredible school but we can't take any more disappointment or allow this principal's poor leadership and judgement calls impact our youngest child's academic accomplishments. If I were voting based on the past principal, the school would have a 4 or 5 star rating but 1 star is the most I'm willing to give this school after the past two years. Please, go elsewhere so your children have a better school experience! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
