Allen Village Elementary Academy

Summary:

Allen Village Elementary Academy is a public charter elementary school serving grades 3-5 in Kansas City, Missouri, with a small student population of 98 students. The school is part of the Allen Village school district, which is ranked 294 out of 376 districts in Missouri and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite relatively high spending per student, ranging from $11,179 to $16,727 over the past few years, Allen Village Elementary Academy consistently performs below the state average in all tested subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2022-2023, only 8.1% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in Math, compared to the state average of 41.1%. The school also has very high rates of free/reduced lunch recipients, ranging from 82.18% to 93% over the past few years, indicating a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. While the nearby schools, such as Lee A. Tolbert Community Academy and Faxon Elementary, also struggle with low performance, Allen Village Elementary Academy consistently ranks lower than these schools on state assessments.

The school's low performance, high rates of poverty, and persistent struggles suggest the need for a comprehensive, data-driven approach to school improvement that addresses the unique needs of the student population. With a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (62.24%) compared to the surrounding schools, which tend to have a higher percentage of African American students, the school may need to focus on effectively addressing the needs of this subgroup as well as English Language Learners, whose performance is also very low compared to state averages.

Open Quote I love this school. They are strict but fair. They hold the children at the same standard I do my children at home. They instill morals and encourage good behavior. If you do not want to participate in your child's education or you don't like to follow rules this may not be the school for you. I love it, the staff and the students.I have never seen a school whose children are so well behaved. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
