Hogan Preparatory Academy

Summary:

Hogan Preparatory Academy is a public charter high school in Kansas City, Missouri that serves around 450 students in grades 9-12, with a predominantly African American student population of over 92%. However, the school consistently ranks among the lowest-performing high schools in the state, with significantly below-average academic performance on state assessments.

Hogan Preparatory Academy faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools. It has an extremely high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with over 99% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, in contrast to nearby schools that range from 33.8% to 99.54% free/reduced lunch recipients. The school also spends less per student, between $12,442 to $14,666, compared to nearby schools that range from $15,475 to $19,164 per student. Additionally, Hogan has a relatively high student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.5 to 16.8 students per teacher in recent years.

Interestingly, nearby schools like Academie Lafayette Armour Ihs and Ewing Marion Kauffman High, which serve communities with similar socioeconomic challenges, demonstrate significantly higher academic performance and more diverse student populations. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics, such as school leadership, curriculum, and instructional practices, may play a crucial role in student outcomes at Hogan Preparatory Academy.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I attended Hogan Prep all 4 years of high school. It was the best experience I have ever had in school. My teachers and other staff members had very high expectations for the students. They were a great support system for us and taught us so much. If it weren't for Hogan, I wouldn't be where I am now. I am now attending an university as a freshmen. I am making As and Bs so far, and adjusting to college very well. I can honestly say that Hogan prepared me for college very well. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
