Oakwood Elementary

Summary:

Oakwood Elementary is a public elementary school in Plymouth, Minnesota, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Wayzata Public School District, which is ranked 18th out of 463 districts in the state.

Oakwood Elementary is a generally high-performing school, consistently ranking in the top 25% of Minnesota elementary schools. The school's academic performance is particularly strong in math, with proficiency rates around 70-75%, compared to the state average of 45%. Reading proficiency is also above the state average, typically in the 60-65% range. However, the school's performance on the science MCA-III has been more mixed, with proficiency rates ranging from 33.82% to 56.07%, compared to the state average of around 39-45%. Oakwood's female students and white students perform well, ranking in the top 25% of Minnesota elementary schools, but the school's African American students and special education students have lower rankings, with the African American students ranking in the middle 50% and the special education students ranking in the bottom 25%. The school's low socioeconomic status (SES) students have also struggled, with their ranking dropping from the top 25% to the bottom 25% over the past few years.

While Oakwood Elementary's academic performance is generally better than that of Orono Intermediate Elementary, it is lower than that of the top-performing schools in the Wayzata district, such as North Woods Elementary, Kimberly Lane Elementary, and Gleason Lake Elementary, which all rank in the top 10-15% of Minnesota elementary schools. The widening gap between Oakwood's high-performing and low-performing student subgroups is a concern, and the school may need to adapt its instructional strategies and support services to better meet the needs of its more disadvantaged students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Oakwood is a wonderful elementary school -- it has a positive, upbeat, caring environment and talented teachers who work hard to accommodate different learning styles and personalities of the children. Staff cooperate at the grade level and the benefit shows in the high quality of lessons and creative approaches. Our family has been at Oakwood for 2 1/2 years, and my children are thriving. I love that they have art and music, important curriculum that has been cut from many elementary schools. They're proactive about disciplinary problems, taking an active approach to discouraging bullying and encouraging community, respect and model behavior. The school also has a very active PTA and parent volunteers. Another thing I love about Oakwood is the ethnic diversity within the school -- as the world becomes smaller, I feel it is more important for children at a younger age to have awareness of and respect for diversity amongst people. I believe the diversity within the school gives my children day to day experience understanding, respecting and cooperating with others who may appear or dress differently, speak a different language or have different ideas. I love Oakwood and am very happy to send my children there. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
