Rutherford Elementary

Summary:

Rutherford Elementary is a public elementary school in Stillwater, Minnesota, serving 555 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. It is part of the Stillwater Area Public Schools district, which is ranked 65 out of 463 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Rutherford Elementary consistently performs above the state and district averages in Math, Reading, and Science proficiency, with particularly strong results in 3rd and 4th grade Math. However, the school's performance for female students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds lags behind, ranking in the bottom 50% of Minnesota elementary schools. Additionally, the school's ranking has declined in recent years, dropping from a high of 55th out of 853 schools in 2016-2017 to 234th out of 881 schools in 2023-2024.

While Rutherford Elementary outperforms other schools in the Stillwater district, it lags behind top-performing schools in the nearby Mahtomedi Public School District, such as O.H. Anderson Elementary, and the high-performing charter school, St. Croix Preparatory Academy Lower. The school's declining ranking and performance gaps between student groups suggest that Rutherford Elementary may need to focus on equity and addressing the unique needs of all its students to maintain its high academic standards.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is the best of both worlds. It is technically an Open Environment school, but this program is executed very much like a Traditional school. The children are encouraged to reach their own personal highest potential, wherever that might be. I have two gifted children who are being taught curricula well above grade level because that is where their skills are. This is done respectfully and quietly without the kids feeling any sense of differentiation between the skill levels. I also have a special needs child whose developmental delays are handled beautifully as well, with respect and enthusiasm. They have enough flexibility within this program to individualize and think outside the box, without going too crazy and leaving the children unprepared for the real world. There are other open environment schools in the area that seem to have less structure and more freedom of choice for the kids (which certainly has its merit for some) but this was not a good fit for my children. In my opinion Rutherford does an EXCELLENT job striking a balance between the open environment, and respectful accountability. It does not feel chaotic or distracting at all. I encourage you to tour it to see what I mean. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
