Hidden River Middle School

Summary:

Hidden River Middle School is a public middle school located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, serving 559 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Saint Paul Public Schools district, which is ranked 346 out of 463 districts in the state.

Hidden River Middle School has a relatively diverse student population, with an even racial distribution of 35.96% White, 35.96% African American, 7.51% Hispanic, 7.16% Asian, and 13.06% two or more races. However, the school's academic performance is consistently below the state and district averages, ranking between 358-376 out of 520-545 Minnesota middle schools. While White students perform relatively well, African American, Hispanic, and students with special needs or low socioeconomic status struggle, ranking in the bottom 30-40% of schools. The school also has a high percentage of students (around 60%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Compared to nearby schools, some, like Sanford Middle and Laura Jeffrey Academy Charter, perform significantly better academically, while others, like Friendship Academy of Arts - Interm and The Journey School Middle, struggle even more than Hidden River Middle School. This suggests that the challenges faced by Hidden River Middle School are not unique to the school but may be reflective of broader educational disparities in the region.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote St Paul Public Schools should either get serious about supporting this school or just shut it down. We were lucky and got out unscathed but my heart goes out to the students that have no other options and have to attend. Close Quote

Open Quote I would not voluntarily send my child to Ramsey. This year the district made it all but impossible for a student to exercise their School Choice, so our daughter was stuck going to Ramsey. The classrooms are in chaos. The police are there all the time. The first day of school a child was arrested for making terroristic threats. It's a rare day when there are no fights. And the students have only 3 minutes passing time which means that they have no time to go to their lockers. So they all have to carry every book and binder and supply they need in their backpack all day. My daughter's backpack weighs over 30 pounds. Her back hurts every day.

Stay away if possible. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
