Madison Elementary

Summary:

Madison Elementary is a public elementary school in Saint Cloud, Minnesota that serves 649 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school has a diverse student population, with a high percentage of African American, Hispanic, and low-income students.

Despite serving a challenging population, Madison Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Minnesota elementary schools, with significantly lower academic performance than the state and district averages. Only 30% of Madison students were proficient in math in 2023-2024, compared to 45% statewide and 26% in the St. Cloud Public School District. The school's performance is particularly low for Hispanic, multi-racial, and special needs students. Madison's high student-teacher ratio of 19.2, compared to the district average of 14.6, may contribute to these challenges.

While Madison Elementary's academic performance lags behind nearby schools like Oak Hill Community Elementary and Westwood Elementary, it still outperforms some other high-poverty, high-minority schools in the area, such as Athlos Academy of Saint Cloud and Discovery Community Elementary. Addressing the persistent challenges at Madison Elementary will likely require a multi-faceted approach, including targeted interventions, additional resources, and a focus on equity and inclusion.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We need to move so our son can go to a good school. Getting an education from stray dogs would be more beneficial than what Madison has to offer. Everyone needs to be fired. Close Quote

Open Quote Madison has a diverse population and offers a Mandarin Chinese Immersion Program teaching students the cirriculum in Mandarin Chinese allowing students to learn to read, write and speak fluently in Mandarin while retaining English as their primary language. This program has raised the bar for test results and the school is in high demand in the area. Similarly, ISD 742 offers Spanish Immersion at its Clearview School. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
